Recycle Corner

Metal cans are recyclable, but…metal from outside your house is scrap metal and can damage equipment or cause fires. These materials also risk recycling haulers’ and facility workers’ safety. Take these items to a safe scrap metal disposal facility instead of placing them in your bin! Check out where you can take it: http://www.waukeshacourty.gov/ScrapMetal

Order Regarding Emergency Measures

COVID-19 and the Village of Big Bend

I have declared a state of emergency in the Village of Big Bend.

(Added information) There's no need to do anything different at this time: keep following all CDC recommendations on hand washing and social distancing.

-         Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

-         World Health Organization

-         Waukesha County Public Health

This proclamation formally opens up collaboration efforts and allows us to move quicker if things get substantially worse. Continue to stay calm, and stay well.

March 15, 2020

WHEREAS, an emergency, namely the COVID-19 Pandemic, impacted the Village of Big Bend beginning on March 15, 2020; and

WHEREAS, because of the emergency conditions, the Board of Trustees of the Village of Big Bend is unable to meet promptly; and

WHEREAS, due to this emergency, I am authorized by Wis. Stat. s. 323.14(4)(b) to exercise by proclamation all of the powers conferred upon the Village Board under Wis. Stat. ss. 323.14(a) and 323.11 that appear necessary and expedient;

NOW, THEREFORE, as President of the Village of Big Bend, I proclaim that an emergency exists within the Village by reason of an imminent threat of a disaster due to the COVID-19 Pandemic;

FURTHERMORE, I proclaim that city officials may do whatever is necessary and expedient for the health, safety, protection, and welfare of persons and property within the Village, including the power to bar, restrict, or remove all unnecessary traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, from the highways;

FURTHERMORE, this proclamation of the emergency shall be limited to this date until May 15, 2020, and shall be subject to ratification, alteration, modification, or repeal by the common council as soon as the council can meet, but the subsequent action taken by the Village Board on Tuesday March 17, 2020 shall not affect the prior validity of this proclamation.

The Village of Big Bend Library Closed

The Big Bend Village Library will be closed to the public from Monday March 16 through Sunday April 5, 2020. All library programs will be cancelled or rescheduled. All overdue fines during this time period will be waived. Any holds you make will be kept for you until Monday April 6th. Please contact us at 262.662.3571 with any questions, and we will get back to you during regular weekday business hours. As always, we appreciate your patronage, and look forward to seeing you, healthy, soon!

The following is a response that many of the libraries share:

A variety of factors prompt the service change including the declaration of a national emergency, the latest health information available as of today and the safety of the community. Very specific factors to our Library include the closing of the school district, which most likely would prompt greater foot traffic in the Library in close quarters with an inability to continually sanitize, the areas in the library that encourage gathering, vulnerable populations that visit the Library including senior citizens, and the inability to maintain social distances.  We would rather, as some in the Bridges Library System have elected to do, close for the greater good than become an epicenter for transmission and spread.

At an abundance of caution, we urge our community to remain calm. We understand that public opinion may be varied, however as a matter of concern and a deep understanding of the variety of users of the Library and the limitations of the facility and staff, these difficult decisions were reached with the most reputable informative resources available.

Updates on any public library closures will be posted on the Bridges Library System’s website should they occur: https://bridgeslibrarysystem.org/library-closings/.
