GARBAGE COLLECTION

I am sure that by now many of you know we have a new waste hauler.  John's Disposal became our hauler in July.  At the end of this month they will be delivering new 96 gallon brown carts that will replace your existing garbage cans.  The recycling bins will remain, and be picked up as always.

Each home will receive one 96-gallon brown cart for garbage free of charge.  Any additional carts will cost $5.00 per month to be paid directly to Johns Disposal.  Garbage will be collected weekly.

All material must fit in the brown cart. Automated trucks can not pick up any material that is next to the cart.  Use the brown cart for garbage; mixed loose garbage consisting of broken toys, ceramics, plastic hangers, etc; and bagged garbage consisting of food waste, plastic wrap & bags, styrofoam, and other garbage, etc.

Large and extra garbage can be taken to the Village Garage on the 3rd Saturday of each month, March through November.  Appliances and tires can be picked up for an additional charge.

The arrows on the lid of the garbage cart must point to the street.  Handle and wheels of cart should face away from the street.  The garbage cart should be placed within 2 feet of the street on one side of the driveway.  The recycling should be placed within 2 feet of the street on the other side of the driveway.  Please keep 6 feet of clearance between the carts and other objects, especially mailboxes and vehicles.

Recyclables will still be collected every week.  Recycling must fit in your own recycling containers.  If you need extra containers, they are available at the Village Hall.  All paper products must be bundled separately and put next to the other recycling.  For more information on recycling, please see our Green Page under Departments.

The first pickup with the NEW automated garbage system will be on Monday, October 5, 2009.  Please have your garbage and recyclables out on Sunday night or by 6:00 am on Monday morning.

If you have any questions please call the Village Hall or John's Disposal toll free at 1-888-473-4701 Mon-Fri. 8:00 am-4:30 pm & Sat. 8:00 am-12:00 pm., or email them at office@johnsdisposal.com.

FOR ALL DOG OWNERS

Help us protect animals from abuse, neglect and cruel treatment.  By buying your dog licenses you are funding animal abuse prevention programs in Waukesha County.  Please remember that dog licenses are required by state law and expire on December 31st of each year.  A dog license is required for all dogs over 5 months old, and is issued through the Village Clerks office.  Your veterinarian does not issue dog licenses, but can provide the Proof of Rabies certificate that is needed to obtain the license. Thank you for your compliance with the law and for providing much needed funds to protect animals in out community.  Dog licenses in the Village of Big Bend are $10.00 for spayed or neutered dogs, $15.00 for those who are not.  If licenses are purchased after April 1st and the dog is not a puppy under 5 months or a dog new to that household, an extra $5.00 will be assessed. It might be a good idea to get your dog(s) licensed when you come to pay your taxes.

IMPORTANT RECYCLING REMINDERS

Two separations required

Residents are reminded that paper must be separated from bottles and cans when setting out recyclables.  The County recycling facility that processes the material is designed to handle the two types of materials separately.  Paper, including newspaper, junk mail, catalogs, magazine, cardboard and box board (cereal, snack, tissue, etc) must be bundled/tied with string or placed in brown paper bags, while the cans and bottles are placed loose in the bin.

The collection and processing system works most efficiently; when residents set out recyclables properly. Residents need to understand that keeping paper separate from cans and bottles is critical to our ability to sort and bale 23,000 tons of paper, metal and plastics annually and sell them to manufacturers.

Residents needing a new blue bin can pick one up at the Village Hall and at the DPW garage on dumpster day.   For more information about what to recycle, details on preparation of materials, or to schedule a group tour of the recycling facility, please visit www.waukeshacounty.gov/recycling or call 262-896-8300.
